Aetna responds to new cancer screening guidelines

In November, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) issued new guidelines regarding screening mammograms.  Days later, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) updated its recommendations for cervical cancer screening.  We recognize that these new guidelines have caused some concern and confusion for consumers, particularly since they were released in rapid succession.

Aetna’s coverage policies for these cancer screenings remain unchanged.  For members with coverage for preventive care Aetna currently covers:

  • Annual screening mammograms for women beginning at age 40, and for women younger than age 40 who have a family history or genetic risk factors that place them at heightened risk for breast cancer
  • Annual cervical cancer screenings with no age restrictions.

Aetna’s Clinical Policy Bulletins (CPBs) state Aetna’s policies on the medical necessity of medical technologies and services.  We review our clinical policies annually or more frequently.  This includes a review of new evidence, guidelines and recommendations from medical professional organizations and public health agencies.

We encourage our members to seek appropriate preventive care and to speak with their physician about the health screenings that are appropriate for their age, health status and family history.
